PSYCHOLOGY

Prof Rona.png

11 London has formed a partnership with the Health Psychology department at Kings College London to build insights into how people live with different conditions. By applying her knowledge of health psychology models and trends, Prof Moss-Morris helps illuminate key issues, including how patients react to diagnoses and treatments, and how they perceive their relationships with their healthcare professionals.

We also have Dr Simon Moore on our team, chartered psychologist and behavioural scientist, who can identify the actual needs and values (observed and non-conscious) that drive retention and trust in brands and adherence programmes.

  • Health psychology is a branch of psychology focused on how psychological, behavioural, and social factors influence health, illness, and healthcare. It explores how factors like stress, personality, lifestyle choices, and social support impact physical well-being and how individuals cope with illness. Health psychologists work to improve health outcomes by promoting healthier behaviours, designing interventions, and supporting patients in managing chronic conditions.

  • Health psychology encompasses several key areas:

    • Health promotion: Encouraging behaviours such as regular exercise, healthy eating, and smoking cessation.

    • Disease prevention: Addressing risk factors for illnesses, such as stress management to reduce heart disease risk.

    • Chronic illness management: Helping patients cope with conditions like diabetes or cancer through behavioural and psychological strategies.

    • Healthcare system improvement: Enhancing patient-provider communication and adherence to medical advice.

    • Psychosocial factors in health: Studying how stress, emotions, and social networks affect health.

  • Health psychologists support patients by:

    • Behavioural interventions: Teaching skills to adopt healthy habits or manage stress effectively.

    • Coping strategies: Helping patients deal with chronic illness, pain, or medical procedures.

    • Motivational support: Encouraging adherence to treatment plans or medication regimens.

    • Therapeutic approaches: Using cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) or mindfulness techniques to address anxiety, depression, or other mental health concerns linked to illness.

    • Patient education: Providing information on managing conditions and understanding treatment options.

  • Health psychology plays a critical role in public health by informing the way we design and implement interventions that improve populations’ health. For example, smoking cessation campaigns, vaccine uptake programmes and mental health awareness initiatives are all rooted health psychology insights. Health psychologists also work to reduce health disparities by addressing socioeconomic and cultural barriers to healthcare access.

  • Health psychology is applied in various settings, including:

    • Hospitals: Supporting patients with psychological preparation for surgery or coping with chronic conditions.

    • Community programmes: Developing campaigns to encourage healthy behaviours like exercise or vaccination.

    • Workplaces: Implementing stress management and wellness programmes.

    • Research: Investigating how psychological factors influence recovery from illnesses or the effectiveness of treatments.

    • Therapeutic settings: Working with individuals to manage conditions such as obesity, chronic pain, or addiction.

By addressing the interplay between mind and body, health psychology helps individuals and communities achieve better health outcomes.
